Even though I own thousands of books (both printed and e-books),
I still love to go to the library. I go
at least once per month (sometimes two), and every time I still think the same
thought when I first walk through the door of a library-“Wow, they let me get
books to read for free!”. Truly, one of
the greatest things that our local government does for its citizens. As usual, most people are in the library to
use the computers which is fine with me.
That means I get the books! On
Monday, I had put two books on hold-One Nation Under Gods, a history of
the Mormon Church and Bully Pulpit, the new massive tome by Doris Kearns
Godwin. I knew the Mormon history book
was already there (I had received an email) but imagine my surprise when I went
to check out and the screen informed me I had two books on reserve! I checked and sure enough, there was Bully
Pulpit! It just came out on Tuesday and
I was shocked I got a copy so fast! Of
course, I still had to look through the shelves and glad I did. I found Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen,
historical fiction based on the love triangle between Edgar Allan Poe, his wife
Virginia and Frances Osgood, a local poet.
I perused the mystery shelf and found The Coroner’s Lunch by
Colin Cotterill, the first novel in a series featuring a seventy year old
coroner in 1975 Laos. Had to have this one! I don’t think I have ever read a book set in
Laos and I noticed there were already several books in the series so if I like
it, much more to look forward to! I also
remember a tweet I had read from Publishers Weekly which had a list of the best
books of 2013. From the mystery genre,
they recommended Hour of the Red God by Richard Crompton, set in Nairobi
in 2007. Lucky enough, I found it
immediately. So, I walked out with quite
a haul! But…I have already started She-Wolves
by Helen Castor so I have to finish this first!
Too many books, not enough time!
